Ingredients

  • 2 cups pre-cooked cornmeal arepa flour
  • 2 ½ cups warm water
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • Cooking oil for frying or grilling
  • Fillings: cheese avocado, shredded beef, black beans

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, combine the cornmeal and salt.
  • Gradually add warm water to the cornmeal mixture, stirring continuously.
  • Let the dough rest for 5 minutes to hydrate.
  • Divide the dough into 8 equal portions and shape each into a ball.
  • Flatten each ball into a disc about 1/2 inch thick.
  • Preheat a skillet or griddle over medium heat and add a little oil.
  • Cook each arepa for about 5-7 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  • Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  • Slice open the arepas to fill with desired ingredients.
  • Serve warm and enjoy!
