Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet active dry yeast 2 ¼ tsp
  • 1 ½ cups warm water
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp salt
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • Sesame seeds or poppy seeds optional

Instructions

  • Combine warm water, sugar, and yeast in a bowl. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  • Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms.
  • Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth.
  • Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour until doubled.
  • Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet.
  • Punch down the dough and divide into 12 pieces.
  • Shape each piece into a ball and poke a hole in the center.
  • Boil bagels in a pot of water for 1-2 minutes on each side.
  • Remove and place on the baking sheet. Sprinkle with seeds if desired.
  • Bake for 20 minutes until golden brown. Let cool before serving.
