Ingredients

  • 6 medium apples e.g., Granny Smith, Honeycrisp
  • 1/2 cup sugar adjust to taste
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon optional
  • 1/4 cup water or apple juice
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Instructions

  • Wash the apples thoroughly.
  • Peel, core, and slice the apples into small chunks.
  • In a large pot, combine the apple chunks, water, and lemon juice.
  • Heat the pot over medium heat until the mixture begins to simmer.
  • Cover the pot and let the apples cook for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Once the apples are soft, remove from heat.
  • Use a potato masher or immersion blender to mash the apples until smooth or chunky.
  • Stir in the sugar and cinnamon, adjusting to taste.
  • Return to low heat for an additional 5 minutes.
  • Remove from heat and let cool before serving or storing.
