Wash the broccoli thoroughly under cold water.
Cut the broccoli into florets of similar size.
Fill a pot with about an inch of water and bring it to a boil.
Place a steamer basket over the boiling water.
Add the broccoli florets to the steamer basket and cover with a lid.
Steam the broccoli for 5-7 minutes until bright green and tender-crisp.
Check for doneness by piercing with a fork.
Remove the steamer basket from the pot.
Season with salt and drizzle with lemon juice or olive oil if desired.
